Designer Awards Submission and Judging Guidelines

Deadline for entries: May 2, 2008 – 5:00 p.m. (Pacific)

Award guidelines are subject to change year to year based on judges' feedback and requests. The guidelines listed here are for the 2008 competition only.

Welcome to the 2008 Electronic Lifestyles® Awards Online Submission Process

The CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles® Awards are the most prestigious form of recognition in the residential electronic systems industry. These highly sought after awards are presented each year to recognize excellence and hard work in the industry. Acknowledged by industry members and trade publications worldwide, the recognition is never-ending. In addition to receiving an award and being recognized at the annual CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles® Awards Banquet, winners are announced and recognized in national and local media, including CEDIA's Electronic Lifestyles® magazine that is distributed to architects, interior designers, and builders throughout the United States. In addition, they will be used in future CEDIA publications and press releases, identified as Electronic Lifestyles® Award winners, and published in the Electronic Lifestyles® Awards Book.

User Tips:
You do not have to complete all areas at one time. You may save your information and return to it at a later time. If you save your information before finishing, an email will be sent to the email you enter in the contact information with a code to gain access to your incomplete entry at your convenience.

Each category has specific submission requirements. Please review all requirements and be sure to include them in your final submission. If required information is left out, your submission will not be accepted.

If you are entering more than one project, please go to the beginning of the awards entry process for each project.

New for 2008

From year to year the Electronic Lifestyles® Awards continue to evolve and offer CEDIA members the best opportunities to showcase their achievements. A few new items to note for the 2008 competition:

    • NEW! All Photos Will be Uploaded – Like in years past you will be required to submit hard copy 8 X 10 photos and a CD of the required images for your entry. However, this year you will also be uploading your required photos just like you upload your engineering documents. The hard copy photos and disk are essential for the awards judging process and production of the Awards Book and will be back-up resources for the uploaded photos. Please read the photo requirements carefully for each category as some required shots have changed.

    • Revised! Theme Category – The Theme Theater category has been revised. Instead, an optional Theme Sub-Category has been added to the Large Home Theater, Small Home Theater, and Media Room categories. If you are entering in one of these categories and you feel your entry also meets the criteria of the Theme Category you can enter in both competitions. If your Large or Small Home Theater and/or Media Room receive a technical award they will move on to the Design Panel who will select a Best Overall Theme Category winner.

    • New Award! Best Documentation – There is no specific category to enter for this award. While the technical panel of judges is reviewing all the categories that require engineering documents they will be noting those with outstanding documentation. At the conclusion of all technical judging they will then decide if one entry stands out with extremely well documentation submitted, thereby awarding a Best Documentation Award.

Requirements For All Categories:

    • Must be designed and installed by a full CEDIA residential electronic system professional member in good standing.

    • The installation must have been completed between May 2007 and May 2008, and cannot have been submitted for a previous CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles® Awards competition. Member company show rooms are not allowed for entry. Only paying clients' homes are allowed in the competition.

    • You may submit up to two entries per category. However, projects that are entered into the Best Large or Small Home Theater cannot be submitted into Best Integrated Home or vice versa. Please see individual categories for specific entry criteria.

    • Entry form, essays, equipment lists, project cost worksheets, engineering documents (if applicable), and time & expertise worksheets must be submitted online. Photos, signed copies of the photography consent of use form, the homeowner property release form, and the notarized verification form must be mailed to CEDIA Headquarters by the stated deadline. Please be sure to label the back of ALL materials sent to CEDIA headquarters with your confirmation code that is emailed to you.

    • Company name and logo must be removed from all photos and engineering documents in order to keep your company identity confidential from the judges.

Deadline For All Categories: All entries, including photos and forms must be supplied to CEDIA headquarters no later than 5:00 P.M. (Pacific) May 2, 2008. Incomplete entries will not be returned.

Judging

Winners will be selected by two qualified panels which will judge on the technical aspect of the project and the design/aesthetic aspect of the project. The technical panel is made up of five CEDIA residential electronic systems contractor members. The design panel is made up of members from the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Interior Designers.

Entries may qualify for a gold, silver, or bronze technical expertise award from the technical panel. Those entries that do qualify will proceed to the second level of judging by the design panel. From the gold, silver, and bronze winners, there will be one award given out for the overall winner of each category. This overall winner is selected from those entries that have won technical awards and made it to the second level of judging. The overall winner will demonstrate both technical and design/aesthetic expertise. Judges reserve the right not to award an entry if they deem it does not merit either technical or design recognition no matter the number of entries within the category.

All judges’ decisions are final. Judges’ credentials will be made available upon request after CEDIA EXPO 2008. Please send your written request and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to CEDIA headquarters, Attn: Designer Awards for Electronic Lifestyles® Competition – Judges.

Specifically, but without limitation, the recipients and member companies who employ individual recipients, must abide by the following rules.

  2. If the award recipient is an individual, a company may display the award only so long as that individual is employed by the company, unless the individual grants express permission for the company to display the award after termination of the employee’s employment.
  3. All awards must be displayed or advertised with the correct name of the award.
  4. The entity that displays the award must state conspicuously: the year in which the award was won, or that the recipient is a “past recipient” of the award.
  5. Any display or advertisement of the CEDIA award may not include any statement or implication of CEDIA’s approval or sponsorship of the entity displaying the award or any other entity, other than the fact that the award was presented by CEDIA to the recipient.
  6. No company may display CEDIA’s logo in connection with displaying or advertising the award unless that company is a member of CEDIA, or unless the CEDIA logo is incorporated into the award as presented by CEDIA.
  7. No entity may alter the appearance of the award itself or any reproduction of the award for display purposes.
  8. No award may be duplicated or copied except by photographic means and then only for inclusion in advertising the award.
