What is CEDIA?

CEDIA is an international trade association of companies that specialize in designing and installing electronic systems for the home. The association was founded in September 1989 and has more than 3,000 member companies worldwide. CEDIA members are established and insured businesses with bona fide qualifications and experience in this specialized field. CEDIA members include Residential Electronics Systems Professionals who have emerged as the “fourth contractor” in the building and remodeling industries alongside electrical, plumbing and HVAC professionals.

Driving Forces Behind CEDIA

One of CEDIA’s key missions and driving forces is public policy representation. CEDIA’s public policy efforts are designed to support CEDIA members and ensure that their abilities to own and operate their business are not impeded upon.

The electronic systems integration industry is a distinct and separate trade from the high-voltage industry. Electronic systems integration is a $10 billion industry.

Electronic systems integration industry requires a great deal of variation of expertise. Low-voltage cabling delivers the data that allows high-speed access to the Internet, the wiring configurations to provide whole-house audio, the delivery of crystal clear video, computerized whole-house lighting, and the ability to integrate the aforementioned systems. CEDIA members train diligently and invest heavily in the tools and skills needed to deliver the performance of low-voltage wiring according to industry accepted standards.

  • Single and multi-room entertainment systems
  • Control of lighting, security and HVAC systems
  • Home automation and communication systems
  • Integrated whole-house systems

Education is the core of CEDIA. CEDIA provides top-ranked education conferences, training and certification such as CEDIA EXPO, which attracts over 24,000 custom installation and electronics professionals; the CEDIA Management Conference, geared toward top industry management; new technician training, designed to teach installers the key components of their profession; and education outreach, focused on the installation of electronic systems integration that consumers use to enhance their lifestyles.

CEDIA offers industry professional certification. The CEDIA Professional Certification (CPC) program prepares installers with expertise and technical skills required to work in the low-voltage industry. CEDIA provides levels of testing and professional certification for Installer Level I, Installer Level II and Designer. CEDIA professional certified individuals are required to keep their certification current through continuing education credits.

The CPC “seal of approval” identifies certified installers as the most highly respected and experienced in the industry. CEDIA has certified close to 2,000 custom installers. Consumers who select CEDIA certified installers can rest assured the professionals working in their homes are trained and reliable.

CEDIA members are universally acknowledged for professional designed and installed home electronic systems of exceptional quality, innovation, and ease of use. Industry members and CEDIA professional staff have been actively working with and providing information to state and federal officials about the electronic systems integration industry.

The CEDIA Code of Ethics demands that all CEDIA members must adhere to the highest level of professionalism, safety standards, and laws and regulations.
