Networking School
05 - 07 October 2020
CEDIA Training Centre, St Neots

TCP/IP has become the dominant communications and media transmission protocol for the home technology industry. It is essential to understand both the theory and practice of IP in order to design and implement reliably. In addition, with wireless infrastructures being asked to handle ever more demanding applications, it is also critical that these are designed and implemented in a robust and reliable fashion.

To meet these demands, CEDIA has created a whole suite of IP Networking courses to improve the understanding and skill set of attendees within the industry.

The course will enable attendees to implement TCP/IP connected hardware in many of the situations encountered in the residential environment.

The course is split into three days as follows:

Day 1 – Residential Networking

Ideal for both beginners and individuals seeking to formalise and increate their IP (Internet Protocol) networking knowledge, this course will provide attendees an understanding of IP. With the vast majority of subsystems now having the ability to be converged over an IP network, this is arguably the most important topic to ensure attendees have a solid foundation in.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the 7 layer OSI Model and how it relates to networking (essential learning)
  • Applying the OSI model to residential network structure and setup
  • Recognising and understanding basic network hardware
  • IP Addressing - using the right addresses for the right job
  • Basic network troubleshooting

Day 2 – Advanced Residential Networking

Attendees, who have completed the Residential Networking course, are now ideally placed to study this more advanced course which builds on the knowledge and skills previously gained.

Once the basics of IP Networking are understood (hint: Can you confidently explain layers 1-3 of the OSI model?), this course will deliver attendees the knowledge and skills required to start building more complex networks.

Topics covered include:

  • File sharing between IP connected devices
  • Remote access with Dynamic DNS
  • The Client - Server model
  • 'Ports' and 'Services'
  • Access to LAN devices from the WAN via Port Forwarding
  • Securing external access using VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)
  • Understanding basic subnets
  • Diving Networks using vLANs (Virtual LANs)

Day 3 – Wireless Residential Networking

This course rounds off CEDIA’s Networking School, comparing wireless to other physical layer types, and explores the behaviours of RF considering data speed, frequency and coverage. Attendees will learn the importance, and opportunities of wireless security making sure customer networks are protected and how to expand a wireless network to cover larger areas.

Typical subjects covered include:

  • Understanding Wireless as a physical media
  • Radio Frequency transmission as part of the Electromagnetic spectrum
  • Controlling and maximising wireless coverage using different Antenna types
  • Protecting wireless networks with wireless security
  • Expanding wireless networks with additional access points
  • Controlling wireless networks with management systems

You will receieve an examination voucher code to take the ESC-N certification exam at any Kryterion testing centre (there is possibility of taking the exam via online proctoring if testing centres are temporarily closed).

There will be lots of time during the week for individual questions and topic reviews. There are a maximum of 7 places available on this training track. Hours will be from 09.30 to 16.30.

Full logistics details will be sent out a few weeks before the course by E-Mail.
