How They Did It: Mar Adentro

Ed Wenck | Jan 17, 2019

Mar Adentro is a floating, five-star hotel in Los Cabos that’s won no less than 20 awards for its design and architecture. Smartlab added to their trophy case with their work here, too, winning the 2018 CEDIA Award for Best Multiple Dwelling Unit Design. The owner wanted each room, bar, restaurant, and common area to have an integrated technology experience that matched the rest of the hotel’s luxurious amenities.

Each room has its own set of controls (via tablet or TV screen) for video, audio, shades, and HVAC. Specific, automated scenes for the rooms and common areas are run via a Control4 system.

Smartlab tells us that events include:

  • “Welcome scenes that activate music, blinds, and lights in the rooms when the guest enters the room for the first time,
  • “Door events that trigger the blinds, HVAC, and lights for energy saving, when the guest leaves the room, and
  • “Scheduled scenes activate music and lighting scenes in common areas, playlists change depending on time of day and location, and those scenes are automated in the restaurants, pool, bars, and so on.”

The all-white components are driven by racks in areas outside the rooms, which makes for easier cleaning in the rooms and service access for the racks themselves without disturbing guests. CEDIA’s judges were knocked out by the lighting scenes, especially in the common area, and the “repeatable solutions for every unit.”
