Who are you?

Stuart Robertson, Owner of Sound Living.

What’s your company and where is it based?

Sound Living is a technology integration company based in Melbourne, Australia. We focus on smart home technology and landscape audio in residential and commercial environments.

How did you get into the industry?

I started out as an electrician, helping a friend who owned a Hi-Fi store install some ceiling speakers for a home cinema -- circa 1994. It’s fair to say that from that point on, I was hooked.

What are your favorite projects and why?

My favorite projects are integrated homes that include a home cinema and good quality whole-house audio. This is because audio is still my passion. Having said that, the enjoyment of integrating all technology into one control system is still the most fun.

Which home technology do you consider the most important today and why?

To me, the most important technology is probably not one thing or one brand, it is the integrator’s ability to provide a seamless, easy-to-use system for their clients.

What’s the biggest issue for home technology businesses today and how can they deal with it?

I would say that our biggest issue is making sure that we stay relevant, especially with the amount of DIY products that are becoming available. We need to continue educating clients as to why they should be using a CEDIA professional.

How long have you been a CEDIA member?

With Sound Living, this is my second year as a CEDIA member. However, I have worked for member companies since 1995.

Why did you become a CEDIA member?

I decided to become a CEDIA member to benefit from the training, trade shows, and the networking opportunities that are available to us.

Which CEDIA benefits have you taken advantage of, and why?

I recently became a CEDIA Outreach Instructor (COI) and look forward to not only learning more myself, but also passing on my knowledge to others. I also plan on making use of the online documents and resources that CEDIA makes available to us.

What does 2018 hold for your company?

I am looking to expand our offering to include more lighting control.

What do you consider your biggest achievement as a CEDIA member?

I have been an Australasian Board Member and Vice President, as well as the Chair of the Education Committee and SME for the original installer and designer certification exams.
