How They Did It: Five Buildings in Britain

CEDIA
Mar 07, 2019

This property is a large site, consisting of five separate buildings and substantial gardens. SONA’s brief was to approach this as a single project. The client wanted a wireless network that was seamless across the site, covering every building and the exterior spaces between — nearly 500 feet in some cases — delivering music and TV content throughout the main house, annex, summer house, and gardens.

Lighting control is distributed around the site, with panels creating a system with over 170 circuits. The system also controls water features, two sets of motorized gates, 23 motorized window treatments, and motorized skylights on the second floor. Gas lanterns are also controlled via the lighting system, with ignition circuits triggered from switching relays.

Twenty-six HD cameras were installed. The CCTV features a video analytic system that can detect human motion with extreme accuracy. The system uses POE IP cameras, which sit on the main network but are on a separate VLAN. An intercom includes a total of five entry panels, two internal call panels, and apps to allow full communication with entry panels, which also feature proximity readers and integrate with electronic locks in the main house and annex.

AV sources include Sky, Apple TVs, and Kaleidescape. The main lounge has a 5.1 surround system with a 55" TV discreetly housed in a custom cabinet with a lift mechanism. The main control system carries out automated sequences to prepare all AV zones for viewing. When a user selects a source, the system automatically turns on the devices required and switches them to the appropriate input and settings.

The project won SONA the 2018 CEDIA Award for Best Integrated Home, Level III (EMEA).
