How They Did It: Skyline Views

Ed Wenck
Jul 03, 2019

This residence is meant to be a true oasis, designed for a client with a heavy travel schedule who comes home to enjoy the skyline views from his windows — and then ensuring those windows are completely blacked out for restful sleep. The latter was an unexpected challenge: Interior blackout solutions interfered with aesthetics, so an exterior roller shutter system from Somfy was called into service.

That travel schedule also meant that security was a priority here too, and surveillance, gate controls, and alarm systems are all carefully integrated. In addition to lighting scenes (driven by 231 Crestron-controlled loads) that include, for example, “Away” functions, the client can call up lights and music for a scene called “Boom” — distributed audio and specialty lighting designed to make his guests say, “Wow!” The project took Finalist honors for Design Electronics in the 2018 CEDIA Awards (Integrated Home, Level II).

Entertainment includes 12 zones of multi-room audio (including an outdoor system by the pool and a hot tub zone on a terrace), distributed video, and a home theater that features a 150” 16:9 screen. The team at Design Electronics tells us that “Alexa Echo Plus and Echo Dot units have been used in the main living areas for convenient ways to do such things as select lighting scenes, make music choices, adjust window treatments, control the front gates, and control Phillips Hue RGB rope lighting accents.”
