Keeping an Eye Out for the Industry

by Rachel Tindall | May 24, 2022

CEDIA’s government affairs program is your voice for your business and industry.

The tracking system for legislation and regulations is a cornerstone for CEDIA’s government affairs. It’s capable of tracking hundreds of bills from multiple locations. In fact, as of May 2022, CEDIA is tracking: 667 bills from all 50 states and Washington D.C. and 128 regulations from 35 states related to the home technology industry.

A few topics we’re tracking include:

  • Alarm licensing
  • Connected devices
  • E-waste
  • Electrical licensing
  • Low-voltage licensing
  • The National Electrical Code®
  • Workforce development

MultiState Associates, a full-spectrum government relations firm, provides this very capable tracking system. MultiState has provided tracking system services for over eighteen years. Because of this long-term partnership, CEDIA has been able to track more issues and refine search terms as legislative language and technology related to the industry has evolved.

Together, CEDIA and MultiState refine search terms. When the terms have been narrowed, MultiState’s software searches legislative websites for legislation and regulation based on CEDIA’s search terms. MultiState provides a dedicated policy analyst who follows and reviews legislation each weekday and compiles a report. On the morning legislation is introduced, amended, or has any type of movement in the legislative process, CEDIA receives the reports.

If CEDIA marks the legislative bill as a priority, we get a priority bill notification based on its movement throughout the legislative process. The tracking system is updated throughout the day and over the weekend with the new bills or those who have moved through the process.

Each legislative bill and regulation in CEDIA’s tracking system have key information including:

  • Summary
  • Link to the legislation
  • Bill sponsor(s)
  • Last action
  • List of past actions

In addition to legislative bills and regulations, CEDIA’s tracking system provides committee hearing schedules, upcoming committee hearings, key deadlines, state legislative calendars, and other legislative session statistics. CEDIA monitors the committee schedules legislation, and regulations throughout the day.

Having a strong tracking system is instrumental to a successful government affairs program. A strong tracking system allows CEDIA to keep an eye out for impactful legislation, which means we can advocate and provide support for the entire home technology industry.
