How They Did It: Palme Couture

This winner of the 2019 CEDIA Award for Best Multiple Dwelling Unit is a textbook example of how to build a baseline system that’s completely customizable from occupant to occupant. As Archimedia tells us, “The objective was for us to provide a base level AV and automation system for each apartment with the option to upgrade with maximum flexibility.

“The property development company is owned by an existing customer of ours who wanted to create an ultra-premium brand, Palme Couture. A big part of this was the technology integration with Crestron touchscreens requested from the beginning as a very visible and recognizable face of the project.”

Archimedia then set about providing the following “standard” packages for every unit (which we’ll let them describe):

Audio Distribution. Each apartment comes with its dedicated Crestron Audio Matrix system with B&W speakers. The system has been designed that each audio zone can have its own independent audio stream as well as grouping them together if required. Additionally, all living room spaces have provisions for 5.1 systems if the homeowner chooses to add them. Finally, the Audio Distribution system has been designed to integrate with the Video Distribution system so that the sound of the video content come from the speakers installed in the room.

Video Distribution. All apartments have provisions for a centralized video distribution system to be added. We supplied the various B&O TVs as well as the Samsung TVs.

Integration Control. Crestron is our main control system for the apartments and the communal areas in the building.

Network. We are using a combination Ubiquiti, Cisco, and Draytek. The show apartments have been provisioned with robust WiFi, available as an upgrade in all.

Phone IP Telephony. Each home has their own Cisco IP Telephony System that is connected to the Front Desk of the building.

Intercom. The Intercom system is only connected between the back entrance outdoor area and the front desk of the building. The Main entrance doesnt have an intercom unit. There is a 24x7 front desk staff that will meet and greet any outside visitors and then they will contact the homeowner through the Cisco IP Telephony system.

Satellite TV. Each apartment (and communal areas where there are TVs) have provisions for cable services. The apartments all have triple play provisioned.

Lighting Control. Each apartment has its own dedicated Crestron lighting control system (DALI protocol). All the pools have RGB lights controlled using DMX.

Shade Control. All apartments have been provisioned for curtain control either using Lutron motors or Somfy motors at client discretion.

HVAC Control. Only upgraded apartments only (about 50%) of them have integration of HVAC with Crestron. The developer didn’t want to have any thermostats on the wall and instead wanted to control the HVAC through the dedicated Crestron Touchscreens.

Access Control. Each homeowner is given a proximity card/FOB to access the building, communal areas and the elevators.

Awning Control. Each balcony has an awning that is controlled by the Crestron System.

There’s also building-wide CCTV and a variety of provisional items available as upgrades, from in-ceiling speakers to curtains and chandeliers. CEDIA’s judges were taken by the “exceptional cable schematics and drawings” and noted the user interfaces were extremely clear and intuitive, calling the project as a whole “a really well-provisioned infrastructure for a multiple dwelling unit.”
