HDMI 2.1 Specification (HDMI 2.1) lifts the data rate
ceiling from 18Gbps to a blistering 48Gbps, which equates to 6GHz fundamental
bandwidth. This unlocks a plethora of new capabilities including 8K video with
dynamic HDR, high and variable frame rates, optimized gaming modes, and clever
link training that can establish supportable link speeds to aid in reliable
installations. An optional light compression enables formats that would
otherwise require beyond 48Gbps, or reduces data stress on existing cables
(e.g., 4K/60 @ 9Gbps). But what does this all mean for system designers and
integrators in terms of system design and compatibility? This paper explores
each of these new capabilities and their system design
implications.
